Chula’s Commerce and Accountancy partners up with ETDA to strengthen Thai’s e-commerce and e-transactions Date: 18 Dec 2019
On December 18, 2019, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, represented by Mrs. Surangkana Wayuparb, the then ETDA Director, has signed an academic service MoU with the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy of Chulalongkorn University, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wilert Puriwat, Dean. The event was also attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chackrit Duangphastra, Associate Dean, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kavin Asavanant, faculty member, and Dr. Soranun Jiwasurat, the then ETDA Deputy Director.
The aims of the MoU are to combine the academic strengths and expertise of the two organizations to produce digitally literate personnel, and to develop, encourage, and promote Thai’s e-commerce and e-transactions in order to advance the Thai economy on the international stage.
Mrs. Surangkana Wayuparb stated that, “the ETDA is the agency taking charge of leveling up Thai’s e-commerce and e-transactions by collaborating with our partners to support our dual missions. Thus, we’ve continually established close ties with educational institutions as they have a key role in undertaking research and incubating graduates for the digital industry.”
In line with the vision of the ETDA to transform the Thai economy through e-commerce and e-transactions, the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy aspires to become a leader for change and make Chulalongkorn Business School a top-notch management institution, according to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wilert Puriwat.
The Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy’s academic and research strengths, coupled with the ETDA’s expertise in plan and policy formulation as well as digital infrastructure development in regards to law, standards, cybersecurity, and especially SME and community engagement, will make the two parties competent partners able to successfully increase the competitive advantage of Thai students, educational practitioners, and entrepreneurs.
Such concerted effort will also further the Thai economy in terms of e-standards and digital marketing, aiding it in operating under the e-commerce and digital services agreements of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Recently, Thailand achieved a score of 68.1 on the Global Competitiveness Index 4.0, or an increase from 67.5 for the previous year; however, its ranking dropped by two positions to 40th place among 141 countries/economies because of its relatively lagging ICT adoption. This collaboration, Mrs. Surangkana Wayuparb believes, would play a significant part in raising the digital literacy of Thai people.
